    Yale Honors Seven Seniors and One Team at Senior Student-Athlete Reception Seven seniors and one team were honored by the Yale Athletics Department with awards at the annual senior student-athlete reception Saturday afternoon at the Lanman Center in Payne Whitney Gymnasium. The men’s fencing team earned the Brodhead Award for highest team grade point average. Paige Decker (New Preston, Conn.) of the women’s ice hockey team, Jane Kozey (Ansonia, Conn.) of the women’s crew team and Beau Palin (Oconomowoc, Wisc.) of the football team were the recipients of the Ford Student-Athlete Community Outreach Award. Tucker Kocher (San Francisco, Calif.) of the men’s soccer team and Brenda Seah (Singapore) of the women’s fencing team were the recipients of the Kiphuth Student-Athlete Distinction Award. Pat Killian (Nashville, Tenn.) of the men’s swimming and diving team and Kallie Parchman (Baltimore, Md.) of the women’s lacrosse team were the recipients of the Meyer Humanitarian Award.

    9 Bulldogs Earn NFF Award The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) announced today the members of the 2014 NFF Hampshire Honor Society, comprised of college football players from all divisions who maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college careers. Nine Yale student-athletes were included in the class of 2014: Kolu Buck, Jordan Jefferson, Michael Leunen, Max Napolitano, Nick Okano, John Oppenheimer, Beau Palin, Derek Russell and Cameron Sandquist.

That really didn’t matter because both sides made plenty of great plays on a beautiful day for Yale’s spring football game at Yale Bowl.

    Mandi Schwartz Marrow Donor Registration Drive Adds Nearly 700 Potential Life Savers To date the annual Mandi Schwartz Marrow Donor Registration Drives at Yale have located at least 23 donor matches for patients with life-threatening illnesses, and that number is likely to increase in the very near future thanks to the Bulldogs’ efforts at the sixth annual drive, held Thursday at Commons. Over the course of nearly seven hours -- with volunteers from the field hockey, football and women’s ice hockey teams leading the way -- Yale added 686 more people to the Be The Match Registry®. That brings the total number of registrants from Yale’s six drives to 4,538.

    In the Search for Life-Saving Donors, These Bulldogs Speak from Experience It was the summer of 2012, and Chris Gennaro was about to start his new job as a member of the football staff at Yale. First, though, he had to contact Tony Reno, Yale’s Joel E. Smilow ’54 Head Coach of Football, with a special request. Gennaro had just found out from Be The Match® that he was a genetic match for a patient with a life-threatening illness in need of a marrow transplant. Gennaro would have to donate soon, and he wanted to check with his new boss before proceeding.

(1988-2011). The Mandi Schwartz Marrow Donor Registration Drive at Yale, which is part of the nationwide “Get in the Game. Save a Life.” campaign for Be The Match®, will be held on Thursday, Apr. 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this year. The drive, which takes place at Commons on the corner of College Street and Grove Street in New Haven, is open to the general public. Donors that could help save lives join the Be The Match Registry® through testing that consists of simple cheek swabs.

Many members of the current team are also part of an effort called Earn While You Learn (EWYL), a program that combines the entire educational experience by getting school administration, parents and students working together to reinforce positive behavior in the classroom.

The defensive back from St. Louis, Mo., has been named to the College Sports Journal 2013 Football Championship Subdivision All-Freshman Team.

    Palin Earns National Academic Honor Beau Palin, the captain of the 2013 Yale Football Team, has been selected to the 16th annual Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) Academic All-Star Team. The 43 student-athletes were announced by the FCS ADA on Friday.

    Harvard Claims The Game After allowing touchdowns on Harvard’s first four drives of The Game on Saturday at the Yale Bowl, Class of 1954 Field, the Yale football team’s young defense settled down and limited the Crimson to just six points the rest of the way. Unfortunately, by that time Harvard already had the points that it needed for a win; a touchdown run by junior wide receiver Deon Randall in the third quarter wound up being Yale’s only points in the 34-7 loss.

    Yale Honored by Be The Match® for Efforts to Help Save Lives For five years, Yale University has been helping save lives through marrow donor registration drives inspired by women’s ice hockey player Mandi Schwartz ’10 (1988-2011). In recognition of those efforts -- which have found donor matches for at least 20 patients with life-threatening illnesses -- Yale was honored last month at the annual National Marrow Donor Program®/Be The Match Council Meeting in Minneapolis. Mandi’s parents, Carol and Rick Schwartz, flew in from Wilcox, Sask., to accept Be The Match’s Partnership Award on Yale’s behalf.

With the win, Princeton remained unbeaten in the Ivy League and clinched at least a share of the league title.

    Four Rushing TDs, Three Passing TDs Help Yale Beat Columbia 53-12 Yale posted plenty of impressive numbers on offense and defense Saturday en route to a 53-12 win over Columbia at the Yale Bowl, Class of 1954 Field. The Bulldogs’ 569 yards of offense included a school record-breaking 94-yard run for a touchdown by junior tailback Kahlil Keys in the third quarter. This was the most points Yale had scored in a game since scoring 62 against Towson in 2003, and marked the fourth time in seven games this season that Yale scored 30 or more points.

The Quakers thus came away with a 28-17 victory over the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at Franklin Field, holding off a late rally by Yale that included two touchdown throws from sophomore quarterback Morgan Roberts.
