Yale DB Helped Blue Upset No. 18 Cal Poly
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Sophomore Cole Champion (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) had one of the biggest days on defense a Yale football player has enjoyed in recent years. His performance, which earned national FCS defensive player of the week honors by The Sports Network (sportsnetwork.com), helped the Bulldogs make a national statement in a 24-10 win at No. 18 Cal Poly last Saturday.
Champion, also named Ivy League co-Defensive Player of the Week, was all over the field making plays on Mustangs. The Yale strong safety led all tacklers with 14 while recovering a fumble and picking off two passes. Champion was also named national defensive player of the week by beyondsportsmadness.com.
He and the Bulldogs held Cal Poly to its lowest total in points and yards in 2013, and that included games at Fresno State and Colorado State. It was quite an accomplishment considering the opponent, travel and heat.
The last time an Eli earned TSN Player of the Week honors was Chris Smith (special teams) in November of 2010.
Yale is on the road again this Saturday with a 1:30 kick at Dartmouth that can be seen live on Fox College Sports and heard on the Yale Football Radio Network.
