WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale junior varsity football team beat Milford Academy 45-32 Sunday afternoon at Clint Frank Field.
Milford Academy got the only points of the first quarter, scoring on a nine-yard touchdown run but failing on the two-point conversion attempt.
Yale took the lead at 8:57 of the second quarter on a 44-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Eric Williams to freshman tight end Leo Haenni. Junior placekicker Parker Toms' extra point put the Bulldogs ahead 7-6.
On the ensuing kickoff sophomore tight end Austin Carter caused a fumble, and Haenni returned it 16 yards for another touchdown. That put Yale ahead 14-6.
An eight-yard touchdown run by junior tailback Everett Johnson with 1:19 remaining in the first half made it 21-6. A 68-yard pass helped set up a three-yard touchdown run for Milford Academy with 42 seconds remaining, and after another failed conversion Yale held a 21-12 lead. The Bulldogs got a 39-yard field goal from Toms with one second remaining to go into halftime up 24-12.
Milford Academy drove to the Yale one-yard line on its first drive of the third quarter, but a fumble there was recovered by sophomore cornerback Keith Hawk, who had an open field in front of him and took off 99 yards for a touchdown. Yale led 31-12.
Milford Academy responded with a 99-yard play of its own, taking the kickoff back for a touchdown with 8:45 left in the third. The conversion failed again, leaving Yale's lead at 31-18.
The Falcons scored again on a 31-yard touchdown pass, getting a two-point conversion on a pitch to close within 31-26 with 7:31 remaining in the third.
That was as close as Milford Academy would get for the rest of the game. Sophomore defensive back Roger Kilgore III returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown late in the third to make the score 38-26 Yale. A two-yard touchdown run by junior tailback L.J. Hunt with 6:12 to play gave Yale a 45-26 lead. The big play of the drive was a 30-yard run by Johnson that got the ball to the Milford 10.
Milford Academy scored a late touchdown on a 20-yard pass with 1:51 remaining, and after another failed conversion the score ended up at 45-32.
