Henley Named 129th Yale Football Captain

Jan. 27, 2006

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Wide receiver Chandler Henley (Littleton, Colo.) has been elected captain of the 2006 Yale football team by a player vote taken this morning at Ray Tompkins House.

Henley, a three-year letterwinner, missed this past season with a broken collarbone suffered in preseason practice. Despite his injury he was a constant presence on the Yale sideline at practices and games last fall. He spent countless hours working with quarterback Jeff Mroz, the 2005 team captain, and the wide receiver corps.

"Sometimes a player stands out when he is under adverse conditions," said Jack Siedlecki, Yale's Joel E. Smilow '54 Head Coach of Football. "Chandler knew he couldn't play, but he took on a role of helping the younger players instead of feeling sorry for himself. He's gone above and beyond the call of duty, and that's something our players admire."

Henley leads Yale into its 134th season of football.

"The tradition here is unbelievable," Henley said. "To be involved in Yale football's fraternity of captains, guys that have gone on to do such great things, is very flattering."

Henley has a streak of 13 straight games with a reception entering the 2006 season. He led the team with six touchdown receptions in 2004 and finished second with 49 catches for 716 yards. He also returned 26 punts, for 172 yards, and had a long of 41 yards.

Henley's penchant for spectacular, acrobatic grabs has resulted in several highlight-reel plays over the years, but the most significant was his leaping 22-yard touchdown grab at Princeton in 2003 that tied the game with no time left in regulation. The Bulldogs won in overtime, 27-24. He also had two drive-saving catches in a 31-27 come-from-behind win at Brown in 2002. Henley saw action at punter that year as well, averaging 31.2 yards per punt.

Henley was all-state at Mullen High School in Denver, where his team won a state championship in 1998. He spent a postgraduate year at Choate and was named New England Prep School Player of the Year.

Henley will be formally introduced as captain at the annual Yale football team banquet Saturday night. The 2006 season opener is set for Sept. 16 against San Diego at the Yale Bowl, Class of 1954 Field.
