International Flair for Yale Football
Yale football players continue to play on the international stage, including a mini-reunion recently in Klagenfurt, Austria. Former Bulldog Ben Blake '00, now playing defensive back/running back for the Austrian International Football League's Carinthian Cowboys, was joined by defensive back Than Merrill '01 and fullback Konrad Sopielnikow '01 for a recent game. This was Blake's second season in the first league of the AIFL. His team was hampered by injuries heading into the game with their rivals the Carinthian Falcons on May 16 -- thus the call to Merrill and Sopielnikow. The Cowboys pulled out a 26-10 win, with Merrill scoring a touchdown on offense.
In other international news, Yale sent four alums -- running back Pat Bydume '04, defensive back Steve Ehikian '04, quarterback T.J. Hyland '02 and offensive lineman Jake Kohl '04 -- to Japan along with seven Yale coaches for the Ivy-Samurai Bowl June 20. The Bulldogs teamed up with players from Japanese universities to take on a team led by the Harvard coaching staff and four former Harvard football players. The Crimson won the game, 35-21.
