JV Bulldogs Top Sacred Heart 28-21

Sept. 11, 2005

West Haven, CT - QB Ryan Fodor threw three touchdown passes, including two to WR Chris Solga, and Yale special teams contributed a touchdown as well as the JV Bulldogs topped Sacred Heart 28-21 Sunday afternoon at Frank Field. LB Jay Pilkerton added a blocked punt and an interception.

Yale opened the scoring on its second drive of the day, needing just three plays. On second and five from the Pioneer 45, Fodor scrambled right and tossed one to Solga down near the goalline, where he grabbed it away from a Sacred Heart defender and ran in for the score.

After a touchdown pulled Sacred Heart within 7-6, Fodor responded on Yale's next drive early in the second quarter. Facing heavy pressure on third and 11 from the Yale 39, he maintained his composure while scrambling right and fired one to Solga for a 16-yard gain and a first down. Three plays later he found WR Grant McQueen on a slant pattern in the end zone from 13 yards out.

The Pioneers tied the game with another touchdown and a two-point conversion, but the Bulldogs once again answered immediately. An 11-play, 73-yard drive culminated with another Fodor-to-Solga touchdown, this one a 14-yarder with just 29 seconds left before halftime. The Pioneers' final pass of the first half was intercepted by DB Larry Abare.

Yale increased the lead to 28-14 at 10:05 of the third quarter when Pilkerton broke through to block a Sacred Heart punt from the Pioneer 35. DB Bryan Greer, who had come up with a big sack just one play earlier, recovered the ball deep in Pioneer territory and had a clear path to the end zone.

Pilkerton added another highlight late in the third quarter, picking off a Sacred Heart pass from the Bulldog 43 to preserve the lead. The Pioneers scored a touchdown with 5:33 to play, but the Yale offense controlled the ball for most of the rest of the game to seal the win.

The JV team is in action again Sun. Oct. 2 vs. Bridgton Academy.
