NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Led by freshman fullback Shane Bannon's three rushing touchdowns, the Yale JV football team posted a 35-13 win over Navy Prep Sunday afternoon at Frank Field. The Bulldogs also got a 77-yard punt return for a touchdown by freshman wide receiver/defensive back Gio Christodoulou and a 15-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Matt Kelleher to junior wide receiver Joe Dennison.
A four-yard run by Bannon opened the scoring at 12:07 of the first quarter, with freshman place kicker Alex Barnes adding the extra point. Navy Prep scored at 5:23 but had the extra point blocked by freshman defensive lineman Patrick Moran.
After the Navy Prep score the Bulldog offense responded by driving to the 15-yard line, where Kelleher lofted a pass to the end zone that the 6-foot-4 Dennison leapt up to grab. Freshman defensive lineman Joe Young had a fumble recovery and a forced fumble in a two-minute span in the second to help Yale take a 14-6 lead into halftime.
Christodoulou, who was also on the receiving end of a 35-yard fake punt pass from junior punter Josh Helmrich near the end of the first half, broke open the game with his punt return at 10:12 of the third. Scoring runs of two yards and five yards by Bannon put the contest out of reach. Navy Prep tacked on a 48-yard touchdown pass with 47 seconds to play to make the final 35-13.
Bannon finished with 82 yards on 19 carries, while sophomore tailback Rodney Reynolds had 62 yards on 11 carries. The Bulldog defense had four sacks, including 1.5 by Moran. There were 10 fumbles in the game, including seven by Navy Prep.
The JV team (2-1) hosts Bridgton Academy on Nov. 4.
