Yale quarterback Alvin Cowan has been added to The Sports Network's "Payton Watch" list, which lists the players up for the Walter Payton Award. The Payton Award, in its 17th season, goes to the top player in Division I-AA football. The honors will be presented at the 17th annual I-AA College Football Awards on Thursday, December 18th in Chattanooga, TN, on the eve of the 2003 I-AA National Championship.
Cowan is one of five players added to the watch list as part of its most recent revision. The official "Payton Watch" list will undergo one additional revision, just prior to the distribution of ballots on November 24th. The ballots will be mailed electronically to the media and I-AA sports information directors selected for the voting process on November 24th, and will be due Wednesday, November 26th. The top three finalists (in terms of votes received) for the Walter Payton Award will be invited to attend the presentation in Chattanooga, TN, with the winner of that Award not announced until the event.
Cowan is one of 16 players on the list, and is the only Ivy League player. He is currently 3rd in the nation in total offense (317.33 yards per game) and 10th in pass efficiency (150.30). He is also 12th in the Ivy League in rushing yards per game (47.67) and 14th in scoring (5.00 points per game). The Austin, TX native missed all but two games last season with a broken leg.
