Hawari Named Academic All-America
Nov. 27, 2008
Yale senior DT Kyle Hawari (Plano, Texas) was named to the first team of ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-America Football Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He was the Bulldogs' lone selection.
Hawari, who was also a 2008 first-team All-Ivy selection on the field, earned academic all-district honors earlier this season. He carries a 3.65 GPA in history.
Hawari and Harvard defensive back Andrew Berry were the only ESPN The Magazine first-team picks. The last Eli to earn such an honor was WR Billy Brown in 2001.
Yale's top pass rusher, Hawari tied for the Ivy League lead with seven solo QB sacks, led the league with four forced fumbles and had 57 total (41 solo) tackles in 2008. He led a Bulldog defense that ranked first in the Football Championship Subdivision in scoring defense the last two seasons. The Elis led the Ivy in red zone defense, interceptions and turnover margin.
Hawari earned four letters and started the last three seasons on the defensive line. He finished his collegiate career with 116 total tackles, 13 sacks, five forced fumbles and one interception. His seven solo tackles and 15 overall, including a sack, were a career-best on Nov. 22, 2008, at Harvard.
