Cowan a Candidate for Socrates Award

Yale quarterback Alvin Cowan is a finalist for the Socrates Award, presented annually to the college athlete who best exemplifies excellence in athletics and academics. The award, presented by Sporting News Radio, embodies the Socrates creed of "Strong Mind in a Strong Body": a student-athlete who has shown himself or herself to be a leader and quality contributor in their sport(s), a student-athlete who has shown himself or herself to be an outstanding student academically, and a student-athlete who has shown himself or herself to be a quality citizen in their community. Previous winners include current NFL player Drew Brees.

  • Only Ivy Player among finalists for Payton Award (I-AA Player of the Year)

  • Won Gold Helmet Award for top I-AA player in New England

  • Finalist for Sporting News Radio 2004 Socrates Award

  • Second-team All-Ivy

  • NE Football Writers I-AA All-Star

  • New Haven Gridiron Club Captains Award

  • Verizon Academic All-District

  • Don Hansen's Football Gazette National Player of the Week on 10/20/03

  • ECAC co-Player of the Week on 10/13/03

  • Broke Ivy record for total offense (all games)

  • 10th Ivy passer to reach 2,700 yards in a season

  • Broke 16 school records including season TD passes (22), completions (227), passing yards (2,994) and total offense (3,429)

  • 466 yards total offense at Colgate on 10/18/03 broke Yale record

  • 450 yards total offense vs. Harvard on 11/22/03 is 2nd all-time

  • In 12 collegiate starts (11 full games) he has 25 passing TDs and 10 rushing scores over two seasons

  • Record as a Yale starter is 8-4

  • Six game streak of TD passes ended at Columbia on 11/1/03

  • Only Yale player to throw for 300+ in five games during a season

  • 5-time Yale offensive back of the game award
