Abare Named Walter Camp All-American
Dec. 14, 2008
Bobby Abare, the captain of last fall's Yale football team who has led the Bulldogs in tackles the last three years, was named to the 2008 Walter Camp FCS All-America Team.
Abare, a 2008 first-team All-Ivy and All-New England pick, was the only Ivy League selection on the Walter Camp squad. He was also one of just three players from the East on the defensive side of the all-American team.
The Acton, Mass., native returned to his home state on Dec. 11 to receive his All-New England certificate from the New England Sports Writers. He will be back on Jan. 15 to receive the George "Bulger" Lowe Award for the outstanding player in New England from the Gridiron Club of Boston.
Abare, who earned his third straight All-New England honor, captained a Yale team that led the nation in scoring defense for the second straight fall. He also had more interceptions (10) than any linebacker in school history and scored more touchdowns (4) than any defensive player ever at Yale. Abare is also a finalist for the 2008 Buck Buchanan Award (named this weekend) given to the top defensive player in the FCS.
Abare makes his first appearance on the Walter Camp All-America list. He was named All-America by The Sports Network in 2007.
Walter Camp, commonly referred to as the father of American football, first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp, a former Yale player and football coach, is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to 11 men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation, a New Haven based all-volunteer group, was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting All-America teams for the Football Bowl and Championship subdivisions.
