Dec. 21, 2005
Matt Handlon, a senior safety on the Yale football team, has been named to the Division 1-AA Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star team.
Handlon, who is an economics major with a 3.69 GPA, was second on the Elis in 2005 with 74 total tackles, while he was third with two interceptions. The leader of the strong Bulldog secondary, he had a pair of 11-tackle games last fall including four solos and seven assists against Brown at Yale Bowl in November.
This is a national academic award that began in the late 1990s, and the Bulldogs have been a big part of it. Handlon is the seventh Yale selection to the I-AA Athletic Director's squad and his award makes it three straight seasons with Bulldogs on this team. Jake Fuller '00 and Alvin Cowan '04 were both selected twice during their Yale careers.
Handlon, an honorable mention All-Ivy defensive back last fall, was academic All-Ivy and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District.
