Positioned to Strike After First Day's Play

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Yale men's golf team sits comfortably in second place at the half-way mark of the Century Intercollegiate, which it is hosting this weekend at the Century Country Club in Purchase, N.Y..

With one round down, the Bulldogs have an overall team score of 324 (+40), just five strokes behind tournament leaders Harvard, who finished the day at 319 (+35). The day, which was marked by high winds and inclement weather, saw numerous high scoring rounds – no player out on the course managed a score better than 77 (+6).

"We played in conditions that were as challenging as I've ever seen," said head coach Colin Sheehan '97.

Still, the Elis are poised to challenge Ivy League rivals Harvard on the second day's play, with a number of players featuring amongst the top of the leaderboard.

Near the head of the pack are senior captain Thomas McCarthy and junior Jeffrey Hatten, both of whom fired rounds of 80 (+9) on a tough day to finish in a tie for ninth place. Both McCarthy and Hatten are coming off strong performances at last week's Princeton Invitational, which the Elis clinched by six strokes: McCarthy finished in outright second while Hatten battled vigorously to take seventh place.

Also in the hunt is freshman Sam Bernstein, who finished the day on 81 (+10) despite the difficult conditions. He will look to capitalize on the momentum he generated last weekend, when he powered through his rounds to finish in first place overall.

With the conditions tomorrow set to be little better than today, the course at the Century Golf Club is not likely to be easy. Designed by Colt & Alison, it opened in 1908 and includes a number of tough holes that only get tougher with the weather.

At last year's tournament at Caves Valley in Owings Mills, Md., the difficult conditions left the Bulldogs in fifth place overall, with a team score of +57.

The Century Intercollegiate will resume Sunday morning.
