Team Finds Out NCAA Regional Location
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's golf team will head to the Pete Dye-designed River Course in Blacksburg, Va., for the May 19-21 NCAA Virginia Tech Regional. The Bulldogs won an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament after claiming the Ivy League Championship on Apr. 23.
Among the other teams the Bulldogs will take on at the tournament, which features three rounds of golf in as many days, are Georgia Tech, LSU, Duke and Oklahoma. While the Elis may be seeded 13th, their performance this past season bodes well for the competition.
Wins at the Princeton Invitational and the Ivy League Championship, on top of consistently strong individual performances by senior captain Thomas McCarthy, freshman Sam Bernstein and junior Jeffrey Hatten, have positioned the team well to figure high up on the leaderboard.
Still, the golfers will have to contend with the tricky Pete Dye-designed River Course, which features spectacular views of the nearby river as well as tough bunkers, small elevated greens and numerous collection points. The course was rated four and a half stars by Golf Digest's "Best Places to Play," and came in 18th on Golfweek's Best Campus Courses in America.
The top five teams at the tournament will advance to the May 31-June 5 NCAA Championship at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla.
