Bernstein, Davenport Take Home Ivy Awards
Stellar Seasons for Both Players
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — While the Yale men's golf team finished in sixth place at the Apr. 27-29 Ivy League Championships, two players took home Ivy League awards for their outstanding performances at the competition and throughout the season.
For his top-five result at the Ivy League Championships, sophomore Sam Bernstein was honored with first-team All-Ivy honors. And freshman William Davenport won the Ivy League Rookie of the Year Award, winning the vote of the Ivy League's eight coaches.
Bernstein earned his award after charging up the leaderboard on the Sunday to end in outright third spot with a +11 score. That was a tremendous effort given Bernstein had ended the second day's play in a tie for 11th place, at +13.
"I did not hit the ball very well yesterday but I made nearly every putt I looked at," Bernstein said on Monday. "My strong putting day really helped my confidence because I knew that if I gave myself a good birdie opportunity I would have a great chance at making it."
Bernstein has notched up two stellar seasons with the Bulldogs. Last year, he took home the Ivy League Rookie of the Year and made the second-team All-Ivy.
"On the whole I had a very strong season, especially in the fall. I started with strong performances at the Adams Cup and Macdonald Cup and continued my solid play throughout the first half of the season," Bernstein said. "I had a bit of a slow start in the spring, but the good finish at the Ivy League Championships makes the spring season feel like a very successful one."
Davenport followed Bernstein in winning the Rookie of the Year Award for his stellar opening season on the collegiate circuit. At the Ivy League Championships, he notched up +26 overall to finish in a tie for 22nd place.
Throughout the season, Davenport made a consistently strong contribution to the Yale team.
"Will had a great first year and deservingly received the Ivy Rookie of the Year honors," Bernstein said.
