Look to Top Last Year's Third-Place Finish

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Yale men's golf team will begin fall play in Newport, R.I., with the Sept. 17-18 Adams Cup, seeking to build momentum for the competitive season ahead.

In all, the team is slated to compete in four tournaments in the fall and another four in the spring, culminating in the Apr. 26-28 Ivy League Championship.

To these competitions, the Elis will bring a powerful slate of golfers led by senior captain Bradley Kushner, himself a former first-team All-Ivy player. Also helping guide the team will be senior Carson Weinand, who has consistently contributed to the Bulldogs' performance in past years.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Elis are welcoming one new golfer: freshman Joe Willis. Hailing from Lake Forest, Ill., Willis posted a series of strong performances throughout his high school career, both at state and national level.

Also returning to the Bulldogs' line-up are several high-powered sophomores and juniors, who will certainly figure among the top players across the season. Junior Sam Bernstein and sophomore William Davenport, both of whom received the Ivy League Rookie of the Year Award in their freshmen years, will look to surge to new heights in the season ahead.

Together, the team will open their account at the Adams Cup, an event at which the Elis finished in third place last year. The two-day tournament will open Monday with two rounds at the Newport Country Club, followed by a final round on Tuesday at Carnegie Abbey. One the teams the Elis will face in Newport is Penn, newly refreshed following the addition of new Head Coach Bobby Heintz '92, a former Yale golfer.

Following that tournament, the Bulldogs will return home to The Course at Yale for the Sept. 29-30 Macdonald Cup; there, the Elis will look to go back-to-back after last year's victory at the tournament.

The Elis will then travel to the Philmont Country Club in Huntingdon Valley, Pa., for the highly competitive Oct. 13-14 Big Five tournament. Last year the Bulldogs finished in a tie for 15th place.

The Bulldogs will wrap up their fall season with an Ivy League Matchplay tournament on Oct. 20-21.
