Davenport Closes in Sixth Place

NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The Yale men's golf team claimed second place at the Oct. 5-6 Macdonald Cup after a wet and rainy final round on Sunday. Illinois, a NCAA championship contender last year, captured the championship here at the Yale Golf Course in New Haven, Conn.

The Bulldogs shot 282 during the final round to finish with -8, behind Illinois' -33—four Illinois golfers finished in the top five in a performance that shattered team scoring records at the tournament. This year's second-place finish at the Macdonald Cup ended Yale's two-year winning streak at the tournament. Still, the Elis found themselves substantially ahead of the remainder of the field, which included Ivy League rivals Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth and Penn.

Leading the way for the Elis was junior William Davenport, who carded a final round 70 to finish in sixth place with -4. Senior captain Sam Bernstein was one stroke further back, at -3 in seventh place after shooting 71 on Sunday.

Fellow senior Sean Gaudette closed at -2 in a tie for eighth place, after notching up 70 during the final round. And in his first tournament at home, freshman James Park finished at +2 in a tie for 14th

The Yale team's cumulative head-to-head record this fall is 34-4, with its only losses to nationally-ranked teams Texas A&M, Houston, Michigan State and Illinois. The Bulldogs are now currently ranked No. 46 by Golfstat.

And this year's 11-1 head-to-head result at the Macdonald Cup brings our recent record in the tournament to 60-2 during the past four years—and 95-4 going back to 2007.

Next weekend the Bulldogs will play the F.A. Borsodi Student Championship at home on the Yale Golf Course. That will be followed by the Oct. 19-20 Ivy League Matchplay, which will take place at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J.
