Final Fall Competition
NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The Yale men's golf team will look to cap off a strong series of performances this fall when it competes at the Oct. 19-20 Ivy League Matchplay at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J.
With three strong tournament results—a first-place finish at the Sept. 14-15 Doc Gimmler, a third-place finish at the Sept. 23-24 Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic and a second-place finish at the Oct. 5-6 Macdonald Cup—under their belt, the Bulldogs are well prepared to battle their Ancient Eight opponents.
In particular, the Elis will seek to improve upon their result at last year's Ivy League Matchplay, where they finished in fourth after falling to Brown in the playoff for third place.
The Yale lineup will return to tournament competition after the F.A. Borsodi Student Championship this past weekend. That inter-squad scrimmage took place on two challenging courses: the Yale Golf Course, which will host the 2015 regional playoffs for the 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship, and the Winged Foot West course in Mamaroneck, N.Y., site of the 2006 U.S. Open.
Sophomore Joe Willis, who won his first collegiate tournament earlier this season at The Doc Gimmler, and junior William Davenport, who led the Bulldogs at the Notre Dame tournament and the Macdonald Cup, will also be in the hunt this weekend.
Golfers will play two rounds on Saturday followed by a final round on Sunday. Yale will kick off the matchplay competition against Brown.
"The team is looking forward to the final event of the fall and this rare opportunity to play match play," said head coach Colin Sheehan '97. "They have been playing matches amongst themselves during the recent practices and they relish the opportunity to compete against our Ivy foes one last time before a long winter break."
The Ivy League Matchplay will wrap up the Elis' fall competition. They will then train through the winter and return to competition at the Mar. 22-23 Linger Longer Invitational, which will take place at the Great Waters Course at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga.
