Make Up Ground in Second Round

GREENSBORO, Ga.—Two rounds into the Mar. 22-23 Linger Longer Invitational, the Yale men's golf team finds itself in 10th place with a round of competition remaining. The tournament, co-hosted by Kennesaw State and Mercer at the Great Waters Course at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga., includes some of the top collegiate golf teams in the nation including three-time defending champion No. 1 Alabama, No. 5 Georgia and No. 14 Oklahoma.

After shooting a 295 in the first round of the day, the Bulldogs found themselves in 13th spot. They made up ground quickly in Saturday's second round, firing a 285 to close the day in 10th place with +4 overall. While this is an unfamiliar position for this year's Yale team—which finished no lower than third place in a tournament in the fall—it is a testament to the national strength of the field. Alabama and Georgia were neck and neck throughout Saturday, sharing the lead at the close of play at -20 with one final round of golf remaining on Sunday.

Sophomore Joe Willis led the way for the Elis, firing rounds of 73 and 70 to close the day in a tie for 25th at 143. Just one stroke behind Willis is junior William Davenport, who carded 74 and 70 to turn into the clubhouse in a tie for 29th at 144.

Senior captain Sam Bernstein, meanwhile, shot the Bulldogs' low round of the day—69—in the Saturday's second round to make up for a 76 first round. Bernstein ended the day in a share for 32nd place. Senior Sean Gaudette and freshman Jonathan Lai are tied in 61st place after finishing the day at 151.

Saturday's two rounds tested golfers over the Great Waters Course, a par-72 7,073 yard course designed by Jack Nicklaus. Featuring some of the most dramatic scenery in the south, nine holes are along the shores of Lake Oconee and water hazards are in play in many of the inland holes.

Golfers will tee off beginning at 8:30 a.m. Sunday for the final round of competition at the Linger Longer Invitational.
