Yale Ready for Ivy League Championship

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's golf team looks win the Ivy League title and secure a regional bid for the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship with a successful performance at the Ivy League Championship this weekend. The three-day, 54-hole event will be hosted by the Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn., where the Bulldogs will look to culminate a season's worth of work into a postseason berth.

Yale will look to build off an extremely successful showing at last Saturday's Yale Invitational in which the squad captured the team title after winning by 20 strokes and junior Will Bernstein's one-under 139 performance earned him the individual championship. The Bulldogs hope to bring the Ancient Eight crown back to New Haven for the first time since 2011.

The format of the competition consists of three 18-hole rounds each played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Bulldogs' lineup at the Stanwich Club, which hosted last year's women's conference championship, will feature senior captain Li Wang, senior Jonathan Lai, Bernstein, sophomore James Nicholas as well as sophomore Eoin Leonard

Yale finished in third place behind Dartmouth and team champion Harvard at the 2016 conference championship. Cornell's Luke Graboyes collected the individual title after defeating Dartmouth's Ian Kelsey by one stroke while Bernstein placed third among all players with his seven-over 223 and Lai's 14-over 230 tied for tenth. Since 2013, four different schools have won the Ivy League Championship.

"The players are very excited for Ivies at Stanwich," head coach Colin Sheehan '97 said. "It's an exceptional venue and demanding test that has hosted USGA Mid Amateur Championships in 2002, along with countless Met section events. I know the players are poised for whatever challenges they face over the three days."

Yale lays claim to nine Ivy League team championships since 1975.
