A mediocre 308 landed the Bulldogs in 12th place of 16 teams after the first round of play at the New England Division I Men's Golf Championships on Friday. But on Saturday, Yale rallied to produce the second round's best team score (289) to finish in fourth place overall in the field competing at the Triggs Memorial Golf Course in Providence, R.I.

Yale's second round was so impressive that had the Bulldogs managed the same performance in the first round, they would have won the tournament by two strokes over Binghamton, who was the event's actual winner.

Rick Reissman led all Yale scorers on the second day, shooting a three-under 69. Mark Matza also scored in red figures, registering a two-under 70 on the day. Matza finished tied for 8th place with a two-round total of 146. Reissman shot 150 over the two days and ended up tied for 23rd, as did Colby Moore. Joe Hernandez (152, T29) and Dan Levy (161, T65) also competed for the Elis.

Although Binghamton claimed the team trophy, host University of Rhode Island's Ben Spitz's won the individual title over Binghamton's Jeff Wolniewicz on the second playoff hole. Still, in their team victory, Binghamton prevented Rhode Island from winning the New England Championship for the fifth straight year.

Yale will take its momentum into the Ivy League Championships, which are being held next weekend at the Ballyowen Golf Course in New Jersey.
