April 19, 2008

Rounds 1 and 2 Results

GALLOWAY, N.J. - The Bulldogs' hopes of a bid to the NCAA tournament are looking brighter after day one at the Ivy League Championship. It is a tight-knit top three, however, with Columbia (596) and Penn (602) just one and seven shots back, respectively. Yale (595) started up eight shots on Columbia after the first round, but the Lions came charging back to shoot a second-round low of +9. Harvard (612), which was only five shots behind Yale after round one, fell apart in round two and is now 17 shots behind the leader.

The Bulldogs finished with four of their five players in the top 20 and claimed the third and fourth place spots. Junior Colby Moore (145) once again led the way for Yale, shooting an impressive two-round score of three-over to finish in third place. He also shot one of only six rounds of even or better, when he shot an even-par 71 in the first round. Junior Joseph Hernandez (147) fought back from a five-over par first round to finish the day in fourth place, after shooting even par in the second round. Sophomore Ben Wescoe (151) shot a strong one-over par first round but followed it up with an eight-over second round of 79. He is currently tied for twelfth. Freshman Thomas McCarthy (152) finished the day in seventeenth but only one shot off the group tied for twelfth. Finally, junior Taylor Hakes shot a two-round score of 168 to finish the day in 38th.

Yale did not turn in the only impressive performance on Saturday, however. It was a day for the record books as Larry Haertel of Brown shot an Ivy League-record score of 67 in the first round. He broke the record that was previously held by U.S. Open champion Hale Irwin. Three hours later, Michael Blodgett of Penn shot his own round of 67 to tie Haertel for the Ivy record. Both players shot second rounds of 75 and are currently tied for the lead.

Yale will tee off Sunday at 8:10 a.m. You can follow the action live here.
