NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Mark Matza (Southbury, Conn.), a rising senior, has been named captain of the Yale men's golf team for 2006-07. Matza was Yale's top finisher in seven of nine tournaments this past season, including a tie for sixth place at the Ivy League Championship in April that earned him All-Ivy honors.
In addition to his performance at the Ivy League Championship, where he shot a 224 over three rounds and Yale finished fifth as a team, Matza also helped the Bulldogs to a fourth-place finish at the New England Championship. He finished eighth individually, shooting a 146 over two rounds. His average for the year was 74.7.
Matza competed in 10 tournaments for the Bulldogs in 2004-2005 and had a 77.3 average. As a freshman he was Yale's top finisher at the 2004 NCAA East Regional, held at the Yale Golf Course, with a three-round total of 231 (t-99th).
A graduate of Choate Rosemary Hall, Matza was the 2001 Connecticut State Golf Association Junior Amateur Champion.
