  • 8 Frosh To Join Men's Hockey Program

    The eight freshmen who join the 2012-13 Yale men’s hockey team this fall were announced today and include five forwards and three defensemen.

    All he did was lead the Yale hockey team in scoring the last three seasons - while serving as the emotional leader – and ignite the Bulldogs to their best four-year span in the history of the program. That’s why Brian O’Neill, who earned almost every league, conference and national honor available, has been named the winner of the 2012 William Neely Mallory Award, the most prestigious athletic award given to a senior male at Yale.

    Andrew Miller (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) was announced tonight at the team banquet as the captain for the 2012-13 Yale men’s hockey team. He earned this role through three years of productivity and respect on the ice.

    Brian O’Neill was hoping to play in the Tampa Bay Times Forum this weekend at the Frozen Four. His consolation prize was having his image displayed down the street from the Times Forum tonight when he was named second-team CCM All-America by the American Hockey Coaches Association. This happened at Channelside, in conjunction with the Frozen Four, prior to the announcement of the 2012 Hobey Baker and the Hockey Humanitarian Awards.

    Brian O’Neill has been skating in the American Hockey League for two weeks while honors from his collegiate days continue to come in. Today the former Yale forward was named first-team All-New England.
  • O'Neill Named All-ECAC, Signs With Kings

    Brian O'Neill, Yale's captain, had two significant honors come his way today. First, he signed a contract with the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League, and then he was named first-team All-ECAC Hockey for the second straight season after leading the Bulldogs with 21 goals and 46 points.

    Six games in 10 days – including three overtime contests – proved too much for a Yale men’s hockey team trying to keep its season alive and pull off a road upset in a best-of-three ECAC Quarterfinal series at Bright Hockey Center. Harvard scored four times in the second period to break open a close game on the way to a 8-2 win over the Bulldogs.

    One of the longest and wildest games in the long history of Yale-Harvard men’s hockey came to an end at 9:20 of the second overtime when Dan Ford’s slap shot from the left dot sailed over a number of Bulldogs piled in the crease to give the Crimson a 4-3 win and even the best-of-three, ECAC Quarterfinal Playoff Series at 1-1.

    NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men’s hockey team, 5-1-1 over its last seven games, has a second straight rivalry playoff series this weekend at Boston. The Bulldogs, coming off a first-round ECAC series win over Princeton at the Whale, take on Harvard (10-8-11) in this week’s conference quarterfinal, best-of-three series at Bright Hockey Center. The first puck is dropped Friday at 7, and all the action can be seen live on America One.
  • Agostino OT Goal Lifts Blue To Win

    The Bulldogs picked a great time to net their first win in overtime. Sophomore Kenny Agostino’s 15-foot wrister at 3:49 of the extra session gave the Yale men’s hockey team a 2-1 win over Harvard in game one of the ECAC Tournament Quarterfinal, best-of-three series at Bright Hockey Center.

    Junior forward Antoine Laganiere (Ile Cadieux, Que.), who notched his first collegiate hat trick in game three of the Princeton playoff series on March 4, was named insidecollegehockey.com and ECAC Hockey Player of the Week.

    The defending ECAC Hockey Tournament champions were pushed to the brink but came through with an offensive explosion to advance. Antoine Laganiere’s first collegiate hat trick and Anthony Day’s first two-goal game ignited Yale to a 7-3 win over Princeton in the best-of-three, first-round playoff finale at Ingalls Rink.

    Andrew Calof’s second goal of the game, 33 seconds into overtime, gave Princeton a 5-4 win over Yale and forced a third game of the men’s ECAC Hockey first round tournament series at Ingalls Rink.

    The Yale men’s hockey team, hosting ECAC Hockey Tournament games for a fifth straight year, battles Princeton this weekend in a best-of-three, first-round series at Ingalls Rink. The No. 6 seeded Bulldogs (13-13-3, 10-10-2) and Tigers (No. 11, 8-14-7, 6-12-4), hoping to advance to the quarterfinals and then the championship weekend at Atlantic City, square off on Friday and Saturday with a Sunday night meeting if needed. All puck drops are scheduled for 7 p.m. Tickets are available for all games, which are streamed live on America One.
  • Bulldogs Take Series Lead

    It may have been a No. 6 seed against a No. 11 in game one of an ECAC Hockey first-round, best-of-three series, but this was a close call the entire way. The favored Yale men’s team got a goal and an assist from defenseman Colin Dueck and 25 saves from Nick Maricic in a 4-2 win over Princeton at Ingalls Rink.

    Jesse Root, who had both Bulldog goals, and Nick Maricic, who made 40 saves, picked a great night to have career outings. The sophomore forward and junior goalie helped the Yale men’s hockey team remain unbeaten over the final four games of the regular season with a 2-2 overtime tie before a sellout crowd at Quinnipiac.

    The Yale men’s hockey team looks to gain momentum from a four-point home weekend as it closes out the regular season with a road trip to New Jersey and Hamden, Conn. The Elis are competing for home ice in the playoffs and leverage heading into the ECAC Hockey Tournament, which begins next weekend. The Bulldogs, coming off wins over Dartmouth and Harvard, travel to Hobey Baker Rink at Princeton (8-13-6, 6-11-3 ECAC) on Friday at 7 before battling New Haven County rival Quinnipiac (16-11-5, 8-8-4) at 7 on Saturday at High Point Solutions Arena. Saturday night’s contest airs live on SNY TV.

    Brian O’Neill grew up a few miles from Hobey Baker Rink in Yardley, Pa., and had a group of 40 family and friends rooting for him and his team on the ice he feels so comfortable on. The Yale captain looked at home with four points, having a hand on four of his squad’s five goals in the Bulldogs’ 5-2 ECAC Hockey win at Princeton.

    More than 50 former Yale hockey players returned last weekend to take part in the annual alumni weekend activities that included the games against Dartmouth and Harvard, meals and receptions in the Schley Room and a reunion game that 40 former Bulldogs suited up for.

Five different Bulldogs hit the net and Nick Maricic stopped 25 of 26 shots as the Yale men’s hockey team finished off the home regular season with a 7-1 victory over archrival Harvard on senior night and alumni weekend before an overflow crowd at Ingalls Rink.

    With four games left in the conference regular season, the Yale men’s hockey team looks to get back on track at home when a pair of ECAC Hockey and old Ivy League rivals comes to the Whale on Friday and Saturday. There have been 430 games played between Yale and these two Ancient Eight foes. The Bulldogs and Dartmouth (9-12-4, 6-9-3 ECAC), tied with each other for eighth in the conference standings, drop the puck at 7:35 p.m. on Feb. 17 in a live NBC Sports Network (Ron Vaccaro ’04 with Pierre McGuire) broadcast. The Blue entertains Harvard (8-7-10, 6-4-8) at 7 on Feb. 18 in the alumni/senior weekend nightcap.
