Tigers Take Season Finale

Bulldogs Get Home Series with Big Green

PRINCETON, N.J.  – The Bulldogs dropped their regular-season finale at Princeton tonight by a score of 4-1, but the good news is that Yale begins a new season next weekend when it hosts the first round of the ECAC Hockey Playoffs.

Tonight, before a nearly full house at Hobey Baker Rink, the Elis had a 37-36 edge in shots but could not generate enough grade-A opportunities. That, combined with some untimely turnovers and an opportunistic Princeton offense, moved the Blue back to the No. 8 seed in the conference tournament.

Yale will host No. 9 Dartmouth in a best-of-three series starting Friday night. All three game times are 7 p.m. with live streams for each night. This is the 10th straight season the Elis have played home post-season games.

The Tigers led 2-1 after an action-filled first frame that included a combined 25 shots on target. The home team sandwiched goals around a power-play tally by Yale sophomore Joe Snively.

On the Eli goal 9: 53 into the game, defensemen Charlie Curti and Anthony Walsh moved the puck around before finding Snively open in the high slot. The slap shot went through traffic to find the net for his 11th goal of the year and team-high 33rd point.

Patrick Spano, who finished with 32 saves, had one of his best periods as a collegiate goalie with 16 saves in a scoreless middle frame. He was tested early and often over the 20 minutes, his best stop coming with a kick of the leg on a David Halllisey shot midway through.

Yale countered with 10 shots but nothing seemed to be close to finding the net.

Princeton jumped on a turnover early in the third to make it a two-goal lead, and then converted an odd-man rush to go up 4-1 with 8:09 left.

The Elis followed with a number of chances, including Curti in the low slot and Hayden in the high slot, but Colton Phinney came up big with saves both times.
