Mahony, Johnson, Levings Earn USILA Honor
3 Bulldogs Get All-America Honors
BALTIMORE, Md. – Winning the 2012 Ivy League Tournament and grabbing its first NCAA Tournament berth in 20 years helped produce some national individual honors for the Yale men's lacrosse team. Three Bulldogs, Greg Mahony (Mercer Island, Wash.), Peter Johnson (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Dylan Levings (Massapequa, N.Y.), were honorable mention USILA Division I All-Americans.
This is the first time Yale had three All-America picks since the 1990 squad placed a trio (Jon Reese, Tony Guido, Bryan Martin) on the first unit. These are the first USILA selections for Mahony, Johnson and Levings.
Mahony, a senior midfielder, scored 20 goals and had 28 points. He was a first-team All-Ivy pick this spring and led the Blue with three goals and the OT winner at Stony Brook on April 16. Mahony, selected for the 2012 Tewaaraton Award Watch List, is a two-time All-Ivy and All-New England selection who was taken by the Boston Cannons in the 2012 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft. His 74 career goals are 15th at Yale. He has a 3.44 GPA, is majoring in the history of medicine science (pre-med) and was selected as a 2012 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award candidate.
Johnson, a junior defenseman, was a first-team All-Ivy pick this spring. He ranked among the top 20 in Division I caused turnovers all season and was an Ivy All-Tournament Team selection.
Levings, Yale's face-off man, ranked among the top five in the nation all year and finished with a .632 mark. Levings, a 2012 honorable mention All-Ivy pick, was even better (.701) in league games, taking 80 of 114 battles, including a career-best 17 wins in 22 face-offs against Penn and Harvard. Against the Crimson, he won the first six face-offs and nine of the last 10, which earned him New England (NEILA) Player of the Week honors. He has 10 double-digit win outings this season and was among the top 10 in ground balls in Division I.
It's never easy to figure out what the voting will produce, but there was one glaring omission from the USILA list this year, Matt Gibson. The Yale senior attackman was honorable mention All-America the last two springs, was a 2012 Tewaaraton Award Watch List pick, led the 2012 Elis in scoring with 61 points and ignited the squad through the Ivy Tournament with 11 assists.
