Zdrill Leads Blue with 3 Goals
JAMAICA QUEENS, N.Y. – One game can really make a difference. That may have been most evident today as the Bulldogs opened their 2013 season against a Red Storm team that had worked out its kinks in a regular-season win last week on the road. No. 17 Yale had trouble finishing and grabbing ground balls at crucial times while dropping its men's lacrosse season opener at St. John's, 10-9.
The game went back-and-forth, but the Bulldogs scored three of the first four goals to take a 3-1 lead going into the first break. The home team stormed back to grab the lead in the second with four straight tallies and never trailed from there.
The Elis outshot the Red Storm 48-23 and tested the home goalie, Jeff Lowman, who came up with 17 saves.
Senior attackman Kirby Zdrill had a career-high three goals, while Brandon Mangan had two goals and four points and Sean Shakespeare hit the net twice. Those offensive efforts helped the visitors overcome a pair of two-goal deficits that eventually got them to 9-9 in the fourth.
Sophomore Eric Natale made seven saves for the Blue, but Kieran Mcardle found the net three times, including the game-winner with 59 seconds left, and had his hand on half of St. John's goals.
Yale got possession and called a timeout with 30 seconds left looking to send the game to overtime. The Elis fired two shots off target and ran out of time.
"We are obviously not pleased with the outcome. It was typical first-day problems… some turnovers… we didn't shoot the ball really well and there were communication problems," said Andy Shay, the Ryan and Forst Family Head Coach of Yale Lacrosse.
Eli face-off specialist Dylan Levings won 13 of 22 battles on the X and scooped up nine ground balls. He was one of the Yale bright spots, as was the extra-man offense which netted three goals on six attempts.
"St. John's is a great team," said Shay. "It was tough conditions that both teams had to suffer through. We're pretty disappointed by the loss, for sure."
