Yale Defenseman Up For National Award

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale defenseman Peter Johnson has been selected as a finalist for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award. The award is given to Division I student-athletes who show notable achievement in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The senior Minnetonka, Minn., native meets the qualifications.

A four-year starter, Yale lacrosse has experienced nothing but success during Johnson's tenure. The Blue won an Ivy League title in 2010 and made the 2012 NCAA tournament, both feats the first since 1990. Off the field, Johnson excels in mechanical engineering, one of Yale's toughest majors, accumulating a 3.31 GPA and designing and manufacturing an electricity-free automatic door opener for his senior project.

Johnson, the first Minnesotan to ever play lacrosse at Yale, and one of the first to play in Division I, has excelled on the national stage. A leader on the field and in the weight room, Johnson also helps the younger players excel academically, and was chosen to be a member of the 2010 Berkeley Dean Selection Committee. An active contributor in the community, Johnson participates heavily in the team's membership to the Friend's of Jacqlyn Foundation, which provides support for a child afflicted by pediatric brain cancer. Johnson organized off-the-field activities for the child and his brother, including making the pair honorary members of the Yale lacrosse team.

The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 20 candidates announced in February. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website or on the Senior CLASS Award Facebook fan page through May 13. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Lacrosse Championships in Philadelphia May 25-27.
