McCormack Named MVP On Way to MLL
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The finishing touches on a fourth straight double-digit win season came with the eight Yale Lacrosse Association individual awards being handed out. The Bulldogs, coming off a 12-5 season and spot in the NCAA Quarterfinals at College Park, Md., had many highlights during the 2013 campaign, including a second straight Ivy League Tournament title and NCAA appearance. The final one was captain Michael McCormack receiving the L.C. Stowell Award as the team's most valuable player.
McCormack, a senior defenseman, was the heart of a unit that ranked sixth in the nation in scoring defense and the soul of a team fighting back from deficits all season on the way to defend its Ivy Tournament Championship and earn a second-round national tournament appearance. He graduated Monday and then took off to join the MLL Charlotte Hounds as they prepare to face former teammate Matt Gibson's Long Island Lizards on Friday.
Brandon Mangan led the team offensively all season, including scoring half of Yale's goals in the 7-6 loss to No. 1 Syracuse on May 18, so it was no surprise that the junior attackman was named the recipient of the Walter T. Collins '23 Award as the offensive MVP.
For the second straight season, Peter Johnson was named the team's most outstanding defensive player (Christian Prince Memorial Award). The senior defenseman, who is a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, led the Blue with 35 caused turnovers
Senior midfielder Michael Lipin, who scored a big goal in the game against the Orange, grabbed the Winthrop A. Smith Award for "superior conditioning and team play." His classmate, attackman Kirby Zdrill, had four goals in 19 career games through his first three seasons in New Haven. Zdrill was third on the team his final campaign with 30 goals in 17 games, making him the perfect choice for the Richard Corrigan – Richard W. Pershing Award as the most improved Bulldog.
The guy who wins the most face-offs on the team typically wins the Robert G. Merrick Memorial Trophy for the most ground balls. Dylan Levings, a repeat recipient, has been ranked among the top 10 Division I players in both face-off percentage and ground balls.
Two senior members of the 2013 Yale squad were inspirational for teammates despite getting little game action. Attackman Andrew Cordia and goalie Peter Spaulding worked as hard as anyone during practice, picked up teammates during games and were the co-winners of the Donald J. Reape Memorial Award for "character, spirit, dedication, hard work and enthusiasm."
The Dan Casman Award is given to the undersclassman who has contributed most to team spirt and morale. The Yale coaches gave the nod on this one to freshman midfielder Mark Glicini, who contributed to the Elis' success at both ends of the field.
