Bulldogs Top Hartford 9-7
March 24, 2009
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Coming off a hard-fought loss to third-ranked Cornell and a date with fifth-ranked Princeton looming on Saturday, there may have been a fear that the Yale men's lacrosse team would look past Tuesday's non-league game with Hartford. Michael Karwoski helped make sure it didn't happen. He scored three goals as the Bulldogs topped the Hawks 9-7 on a brisk afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
Gregory Mahony and Matt Gibson each had two goals for Yale, who improved to 4-3 overall with the victory. Matt Fuchs and Brian Douglass also scored. Karwoski, Mahony, Fuchs, Brendan Gibson and Michael Pratt added assists.
Aidan Genik led Hartford with three goals. The Hawks (0-7) lost by two goals or less for the fifth time this season.
Yale outshot Hartford 34-30 and had a 32-26 edge in ground balls. Johnathan Falcone made 16 saves to earn the victory in goal.
The Bulldogs scored the first three goals of the game. Mahony got things started with an unassisted tally with 5:32 left in the first quarter. Karwoski then scored with just two seconds remaining in the quarter.
Karwoski's second goal increased the lead to 3-0 early in the second quarter, but the Hawks scored the next two goals to get back into it. Just 21 second after Hartford's second goal, though, Douglass hit the back of the net and Yale had a 4-2 lead at halftime.
The Hawks had an 11-6 edge in shots in the third quarter, but Falcone stopped four of them and the Bulldogs outscored UHart 4-3 in the period.
Genik's third goal of the game pulled Hartford within 8-6 with 10:50 left, but Matt Gibson's tally less than four minutes later sealed the victory. Ryan Compitello added a late goal for the Hawks.
The Bulldogs host Princeton on Saturday at 1 p.m. on Alumni Day at Reese Stadium.
