Scott Armbrust Scores For Yale
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Greg Balicki scored 4 minutes, 14 seconds into the first overtime period to lift Rhode Island to a 2-1 victory over Yale on a mild night at Reese Stadium. After a scramble in front, a loose ball made its way to Balicki, who blasted a shot into the back of the net from just outside the box. Scott Armbrust scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season for the Bulldogs.
"Rhode Island really fought hard and put us under pressure," said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins. "I thought the quality of our passing was lacking. There were a lot of long balls, and we struggled to cope with it."
Armbrust, who was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week on Monday, continued to show he is developing into a top-notch scoring threat. He gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead when he took a Brad Rose pass and fired a shot into the top left corner from 15 yards out. Rose has now assisted on two of Armbrust's four goals.
"They are both good, technical players," Tompkins said. "I've been very pleased with their play, and as they continue to work together I think they will get better and better."
Erkko Puranen nearly tied it early in the second half, but his shot from in front banged off the right post. He did tie it at 54:29 when he scored off of Andres Ruiz's free kick.
Yale (2-2-2) had a chance to win it with less than four minutes left, but Kevin Pope's header of a beautiful cross from Aden Farina-Henry hit the crossbar.
The Bulldogs had the first two shots of overtime but couldn't capitalize.
Rhode Island (3-4) outshot Yale 15-10 and had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Travis Chulick made two saves in goal for the Bulldogs, while URI's Chris Pennock stopped one shot.
Yale is off until playing Sacred Heart next Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Fairfield.
