In the Search for Life-Saving Donors, These Bulldogs Speak from Experience
It was the summer of 2012, and Chris Gennaro was about to start his new job as a member of the football staff at Yale. First, though, he had to contact Tony Reno, Yale’s Joel E. Smilow ’54 Head Coach of Football, with a special request. Gennaro had just found out from Be The Match® that he was a genetic match for a patient with a life-threatening illness in need of a marrow transplant. Gennaro would have to donate soon, and he wanted to check with his new boss before proceeding.

Yale Soccer To Host Events Feb. 17
Yale men’s soccer will host two events on Monday, Feb. 17 for boys in grades 9 through 12. The first is a clinic which runs from 8 to 11 a.m. at the CFC Arena in Hamden. In the afternoon, from 12:30 to 3 p.m., there will be an information session on the Yale campus that includes an admissions presentation and campus tour.

Tompkins Guides Region I ODP Team To Tournament Title
Yale men’s soccer coach Brian Tompkins continues to make an impact with the Under-15 Region 1 (East) Olympic Development team. Tompkins, who was named the team’s coach last May, guided Region 1 to the U15 ODP Interregional Tournament title last weekend at the IMG Academy Complex in Bradenton, Fla.

Lachenbruch Elected 2014 Captain
Conner Lachenbruch, who started 16 games in the midfield this fall, has been elected captain of the 2014 Yale men’s soccer team. The announcement was made recently following a team vote.

Hackbarth ’12 Signs With Milwaukee Wave Of MISL
Andy Hackbarth, a three-time All-Ivy selection for the Yale men’s soccer team, is in his first season as member of the Milwaukee Wave of the Major Indoor Soccer League. Hackbarth signed a two-year contract earlier this month.

Alers Earns Third Academic All-America Honor
For the third straight year, Nick Alers has been honored for his work both on the field and in the classroom. Alers, a first team All-Ivy defender, was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I men’s soccer first team. It is the second straight year he earned first team recognition after being selected to the third team in 2011.

Five Yale men’s soccer players have earned All-Ivy recognition. Defender Nick Alers, who has anchored Yale’s defense throughout his career, earned first team recognition. Forward Cameron Kirdzik and midfielder Henos Musie were selected to the second team, and midfielder Max McKiernan and defender Phillip Piper earned honorable mention recognition.

The Yale men’s soccer team was dominant in its final non-conference game of the season, and it showed in the result. Scott Armbrust scored late in the first half, and Keith Bond added an insurance goal early in the second half as the Bulldogs cruised to a 2-0 victory over Central Connecticut.

Henos Musie made his first career goal quite memorable. It came off a free kick with 40 seconds left in the second half and lifted Yale to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Harvard on Saturday. Today, Musie picked up his first Ivy League honor. He shared Player of Week honors with Princeton’s Cameron Porter and was named the Rookie of the Week.

A pair of former Yale men’s soccer players won medals at the 2013 Maccabiah Games in Israel in late July. Charlie Paris ’12 captured a gold medal with the United States team in the open division (18-and-older), while Rose helped lead Team Canada to a bronze medal, the first medal of any kind for Canada at the Maccabiah Games.

Visits From Harvard, UConn Highlight 2013 Schedule
Local fans won’t have many early opportunities to see the Yale men’s soccer team at Reese Stadium. The Bulldogs play just one of their first six games at home. That doesn’t mean it isn’t an enticing schedule. Arch-rival Harvard and perennial NCAA power UConn will both visit Reese Stadium in October. In all, Yale plays seven home games. The 10-game road schedule is highlighted by Yale’s first trip to California since 1994.
