  • Yale Honors Seven Seniors and One Team at Senior Student-Athlete Reception

    Yale Honors Seven Seniors and One Team at Senior Student-Athlete Reception Seven seniors and one team were honored by the Yale Athletics Department with awards at the annual senior student-athlete reception Saturday afternoon at the Lanman Center in Payne Whitney Gymnasium. The men’s fencing team earned the Brodhead Award for highest team grade point average. Paige Decker (New Preston, Conn.) of the women’s ice hockey team, Jane Kozey (Ansonia, Conn.) of the women’s crew team and Beau Palin (Oconomowoc, Wisc.) of the football team were the recipients of the Ford Student-Athlete Community Outreach Award. Tucker Kocher (San Francisco, Calif.) of the men’s soccer team and Brenda Seah (Singapore) of the women’s fencing team were the recipients of the Kiphuth Student-Athlete Distinction Award. Pat Killian (Nashville, Tenn.) of the men’s swimming and diving team and Kallie Parchman (Baltimore, Md.) of the women’s lacrosse team were the recipients of the Meyer Humanitarian Award.

    In the Search for Life-Saving Donors, These Bulldogs Speak from Experience It was the summer of 2012, and Chris Gennaro was about to start his new job as a member of the football staff at Yale. First, though, he had to contact Tony Reno, Yale’s Joel E. Smilow ’54 Head Coach of Football, with a special request. Gennaro had just found out from Be The Match® that he was a genetic match for a patient with a life-threatening illness in need of a marrow transplant. Gennaro would have to donate soon, and he wanted to check with his new boss before proceeding.

    Yale Soccer To Host Events Feb. 17 Yale men’s soccer will host two events on Monday, Feb. 17 for boys in grades 9 through 12. The first is a clinic which runs from 8 to 11 a.m. at the CFC Arena in Hamden. In the afternoon, from 12:30 to 3 p.m., there will be an information session on the Yale campus that includes an admissions presentation and campus tour.

    Tompkins Guides Region I ODP Team To Tournament Title Yale men’s soccer coach Brian Tompkins continues to make an impact with the Under-15 Region 1 (East) Olympic Development team. Tompkins, who was named the team’s coach last May, guided Region 1 to the U15 ODP Interregional Tournament title last weekend at the IMG Academy Complex in Bradenton, Fla.

    Hackbarth ’12 Signs With Milwaukee Wave Of MISL Andy Hackbarth, a three-time All-Ivy selection for the Yale men’s soccer team, is in his first season as member of the Milwaukee Wave of the Major Indoor Soccer League. Hackbarth signed a two-year contract earlier this month.

    Alers Earns Third Academic All-America Honor For the third straight year, Nick Alers has been honored for his work both on the field and in the classroom. Alers, a first team All-Ivy defender, was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I men’s soccer first team. It is the second straight year he earned first team recognition after being selected to the third team in 2011.

    Five Bulldogs Earn All-Ivy Recognition; Alers Named To First Team Five Yale men’s soccer players have earned All-Ivy recognition. Defender Nick Alers, who has anchored Yale’s defense throughout his career, earned first team recognition. Forward Cameron Kirdzik and midfielder Henos Musie were selected to the second team, and midfielder Max McKiernan and defender Phillip Piper earned honorable mention recognition.
