3 QUESTIONS FOR BORTEY

Biggest soccer influences and why?

"My father has been my biggest soccer influence because he was my very first coach and has given me many tips in the art of goalkeeping. He always encourages me to play and enjoy the game I love."

Do you have an idol or hero?

"My soccer idol would be Thierry Henry. I love his style because he seemed to enjoy the game when he was on the pitch, and it truly reflected in his performances. Not only was he one of the greatest players to ever play the game, but he also respected the game and competed with great passion. I wear No. 14 because of Thierry Henry."

Why Yale?

"Yale provides the balance of academics and athletics that I am looking for in college. The prestigious academic reputation of Yale is unique. The coaches are very nice and I made an immediate connection when I met them. I feel that Yale gives me the best opportunity to develop as a person and explore the many academic opportunities present while also competing athletically at a high level."

Coach Stannard On Bortey: "Andrew amazed us with his athleticism, quickness, and shot stopping the first time we saw him.  He has excellent reflexes and his ability to close angles down quickly is fantastic. He is on the `smaller' size for a GK but plays much bigger than his size and he is also very courageous and has a big heart, as well.  Andrew is probably good enough with his feet to play as a field player and this should provide our backline with additional confidence. Andrew also has a very affable personality and does a pretty good job communicating on the field which is very important for a GK.  He will push our returning GKs immediately both in training and for playing time."
