Host George Mason, Travel To Fairleigh Dickinson

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The start of Ivy League play is fast approaching, and the Bulldogs have two more opportunities to make their final preparations. They host George Mason on Friday at 7 p.m. and then have a Sunday afternoon date at Fairleigh Dickinson at 3 p.m. ESPN+ has the video of Friday's game, while Sunday's contest can be seen on NEC Front Row.

Here are notes on the weekend.

  • Yale opens Ivy play at Harvard on Sept. 29.
  • The Bulldogs (2-2-1) are coming off two of their best performances of the season, a 2-2 tie with then No. 4 Michigan State last Friday and a 4-0 victory over Bryant on Tuesday.
  • It has been a week of honors for the Bulldogs. Senior Nicky Downs was selected as one of 30 candidates for the 2018 Senior Class Award in collegiate soccer. Downs leads team with three goals. Paolo Carroll was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week. Carroll, who shares the team lead with seven points, assisted on both goals in the tie with Michigan State. He also had a strong game on Tuesday vs. Bryant, scoring once and adding an assist.
  • The Bulldogs lead the Ivy League with 13 assists and are second in goals with nine.
  • Yale has outscored its opponents 6-1 in the first half.
  • Yale and George Mason are playing for the second time. The Patriots edged the Bulldogs 1-0 in overtime at the 2006 Yale Classic.
  • Sunday will be the ninth meeting between Yale and Fairleigh Dickinson. Last year at Reese Stadium, the Bulldogs had a 21-8 edge in shots and also had the better of the possession but suffered a 2-0 loss to the Knights in the season opener.

SCOUTING GEORGE MASON

The extreme weather caused by Hurricane Florence has affected George Mason's schedule. The Patriots (1-2) haven't played since a 5-4 win over Gardner Webb on Sept. 8. Games with Coastal Carolina and Campbell last weekend were cancelled. George Mason returns 21 letterwinners and seven starters from last year's team that went 5-9-2. Patriots coach Greg Andrulis is a Litchfield, Conn., native and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in psychology in 1980 from Eastern Connecticut State University.

SCOUTING FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON

The Knights (3-3-2) are coming off a 3-1 loss at Iona on Tuesday. Ahu Obhakhan has scored five of FDU's nine goals. The Knights were picked to finish third in the NEC preseason poll. Long-time head coach Seth Roland earned his 200th career victory when FDU beat UAB on Aug. 31.
