FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Lindsey Williams scored the only goal of the game in the 63rd minute, lifting Yale to a 1-0 win over Fairfield. Williams took a through ball from Andrew Dealy at the top of the box, beat his defender and delivered a shot into the lower left-hand corner. It was the Bulldogs (5-3) fourth straight victory, all of which have been by 1-0 final scores.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half. Yale had two opportunities in the final 15 minutes of the first period. Alex Munns' header off a corner kick hit the cross bar, which Fairfield goalkeeper Andrew Frankel cleared. At the 42 minute mark, Ryan Raybould took a shot which just missed the post off a corner kick.
Yale came out in the second half and made a run in the opening minute. Raybould sent a shot to the lower left corner, which Frankel dove and pushed aside. The Stags (3-4-1) did not take their first shot until the 78 minute mark, when Joseph DosSantos released a shot from the middle of the box, which just skirted past the right post. Ed Meyer also had a chance a few minutes later when he one-timed a back pass from 20 yards which just missed the lower right-hand corner.
Fairfield's best chance came in the final five minutes when Mike Troy controlled a loose ball and went untouched toward goalkeeper Matt Aleksinas. He let go a low shot which Aleksinas deflected wide. Yale almost put the game out of reach when it countered off a Fairfield attack. Williams had a straight run to the goal, but defender Danny Ambrosio's slilding tackle ended the threat.
Yale outshot Fairfield by a 9-4 count. Frankel finished the game with a season-high six saves. Aleksinas made one save for Yale.
Yale hosts Dartmouth on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium.
