First Trip Of Season Takes Yale To Dartmouth Classic
Sept. 11, 2008
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Yale men's soccer team will try to build on the momentum earned in last Sunday's 2-0 season-opening victory over Maine when they travel to Hanover, N.H., to play two games at the Dartmouth Classic. The Bulldogs take on Colgate on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and battle Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday at noon. Live Stats for both games will be available at dartmouthsports.com.
Goal scoring was thought to be Yale's biggest concern entering the season, but it didn't prove to be a problem against Maine. Jordan Raybould got the Bulldogs on the board midway through the first half, and Eric Meyer added a goal in the 62nd minute. Yale also generated a number of quality scoring opportunities.
"I thought we were determined and persistent in the Maine game, and we will need to continue that this weekend," said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins. "The Dartmouth Classic always provides excellent competition, and this year is no exception. We will match up with two very good teams who will bring out the best in us."
Colgate (2-0-2) is ranked fourth in this week's NSCAA Mid-Atlantic regional poll. The Red Raiders were picked to finish first in the Patriot League preseason poll. In addition, goalkeeper David Cappucio was named the preseason Defensive Player of the Year. So far, Cappucio has allowed only two goals and has a .900 save percentage.
Fairleigh Dickinson (2-1) opened the season with an impressive 2-1 victory over Washington at Portland's Tournament. The Knights are coming off a 5-4 overtime win against Manhattan on Monday. Paul King was named the Northeast Conference's Rookie of the Week on Tuesday after scoring his first career goal in the win over Washington.
