Bulldogs Face Penn, Franklin & Marshall Saturday
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Yale men's squash team will open both its road and Ivy League schedule this Saturday, traveling first to the University of Pennsylvania and then to Franklin & Marshall College.
Yale will start off its Keystone State road trip by facing the Penn Quakers at 11 a.m. at the Ringe Squash Courts in Philadelphia. Following the Penn match, the Bulldogs will travel to Lancaster to take on the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats at the Mayser Center at 5 p.m.
Yale (1-0) is returning from the holiday break looking to continue its early season success. Following a strong preseason highlighted by a victory in the Ivy Scrimmages, the Bulldogs opened up the 2009-10 regular season by defeating Williams College 9-0 on Nov. 20.
Penn (1-2, 0-1 Ivy) looks to rebound from a tough start to the season in which the Quakers dropped their first two matches. The Quakers lost a hard-fought match to Western Ontario 5-4 on the morning of Nov. 21 before falling to Cornell 9-0 later that same day. Penn earned its first victory Wednesday night, defeating Franklin & Marshall 8-1 in Philadelphia. Last season, the Bulldogs defeated the Quakers 8-1 in their only meeting, an early season matchup at the Brady Squash Center in New Haven.
Franklin & Marshall (0-2) will also look to improve on its early season results this weekend against the Bulldogs. The Diplomats lost their opener on Nov. 22 to Dartmouth by a final of 7-2. Last season, the Bulldogs downed F&M 9-0 in the Yale Round Robin in January.
While Yale will enter both matches Saturday as the favorite, the contests will serve as a barometer of the team's potential going forward. Despite early season results of decidedly different natures, all three teams hav e had the opportunity to build upon strengths, improve weaknesses, and adjust their ladders as necessary since their last game action. The Bulldogs will look to maintain their strong play this weekend before taking over a month off for final exams and winter break, returning to play Jan. 9 at home against Dartmouth.
