Fenwick Gets Win at No. 5
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Monday the No. 2 Yale men's squash team put up a strong fight in its last match of the regular season but eventually lost 6-3 to No. 3 Harvard. The result gave Harvard a share of the Ivy title with No. 4 Princeton and placed Yale in a tie with No. 5 Cornell for third in the league.
The meeting of rivals was highly contested from the beginning, with all three of the first round matches taking four or more games to decide. The match at No. 9 was the first to end; Harvard's Matt Roberts defeated sophomore Joseph Roberts 3-1. Not letting the Crimson run away with it, the Bulldogs fought back at No. 6, where freshman Zachary Leman posted a 3-2 win over Thomas Mullaney. Meanwhile at No. 3, senior Richard Dodd took Nigel Koh to five games but eventually faltered, making the score after three matches 2-1 in favor of the Crimson.
In the second cycle, the Bulldogs gained some ground with wins at Nos. 5 and 8 by freshman Sam Fenwick and junior Charlie Wyatt, respectively. Both matches carried into five games. At No. 2, senior captain Hywel Robinson took a 1-0 lead but proceeded to drop the next three games to Brandon McLaughlin.
With the score tied 3-3, the match's fate rode on the third cycle. At No. 1 senior Kenneth Chan faced off at against Ali Farag, the nation's top player, who handed him the only 3-0 loss of the night. Farag remains undefeated in collegiate play and is the favorite for the CSA Individual Championship. Juniors Eric Caine and Neil Martin were the only two Bulldogs left to play, and both needed to win their matches to come away with a victory and an Ivy championship. Unfortunately, the Crimson proved too much for the pair, and Caine fell in four games at No. 7, while Martin lasted five at No. 4. Yale finishes the season with an 11-3 record overall and a 5-2 record in the Ivy League.
The Bulldogs begin their quest for a national championship on Friday as they host and compete in the CSA Team Championships. They will likely play Cornell in the first round.
