Bulldogs Handle Midshipmen, 9-0

ANNAPOLIS, MD - In Yale's final tune-up before the stretch run of their Ivy League schedule, the Bulldogs handily defeated the Navy Midshipmen by the score of 9-0 on Saturday in Annapolis. Six Bulldogs won in three games, and No. 3 Todd Ruth won a hard-fought five-game match against Allan Lutz.

With Max Samuel, Aaron Fuchs, and Ho Ming Chiu out of the Eli lineup, the Yale underclassmen stepped up to perform well in Maryland. Freshmen John Fulham and Michael Maruca had solid performances against their respective opponents. No. 1 Fulham defeated Nils Mattsson, 3-0 (9-7, 9-6, 9-0) and No. 8 Maruca downed Allen Hartley, 3-1 (3-9, 9-6, 9-1, 9-5).

No. 3 Todd Ruth's match with Allan Lutz went back and forth, but the sophomore from Gladwyne, PA eventually pulled out the win for the Bulldogs, 3-2 (8-10, 9-3, 9-6, 4-9, 9-0).

No. 2 Francis Johnson came back after a rough first game to beat Jeff Sawin, 3-1 (2-9, 10-8, 9-2, 9-3), and No. 6 Naishadh Lalwani posted a solid 3-1 win versus Ben Mantica (4-9, 9-2, 9-2, 9-0). The rest of the Eli victories came in three games.

The Bulldogs will be back in action next Saturday at 12:00 p.m., when they head to Princeton to face the No. 2-ranked Tigers.
