Bulldogs Tame Quakers At CSAs

CAMBRIDGE, MA - Two days after beating Harvard 7-2, Yale scored a solid 7-2 win over Penn in the first round of the Collegiate Squash Association team championships on Friday in Cambridge. Three Bulldogs pulled out huge five-game wins to propel the Elis into the semifinals of the championships.

No. 3 John Fulham and No. 5 Ho Ming Chiu each stepped up after rough starts to win their matches in dramatic fashion. Fulham beat Mark Froot, 3-2 (5-9, 2-9, 9-6, 9-2, 9-1) and Chiu downed James Clark, 3-2 (2-9, 2-9, 9-5, 9-6, 9-1).

No. 8 Colin Campbell also eked out a win in a five-game thriller. After taking a 2-1 lead, Campbell lost a tough fourth game to Parker Justi, 10-8. Campbell, however, roared back for a 9-1 win in the fifth to win the match for the Elis.

The rest of the Bulldog victories came in less dramatic fashion. No. 4 Francis Johnson beat Porter Drake, 3-0 (9-6, 9-5, 9-1), No. 6 Moshe Sarfaty defeated Joe Raho, 3-0 (9-5, 9-7, 9-4), No. 7 Todd Ruth handled Andrew Zimmerman, 3-0 (10-8, 9-6, 9-5), and No. 9 Naishadh Lalwani downed Ryan Rayfield, 3-0 (9-3, 9-2, 9-0).

Yale will get a rematch with Princeton in the semifinals tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. The Tigers beat Dartmouth today, 9-0.
