Loss to Harvard, 6-3, Forces Yale to Share Ivy Title

Feb. 22, 2006

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Harvard's 6-3 victory over Yale at the Brady Squash Center Wednesday night denied Yale the outright Ivy League title. With a 5-1 record, the Bulldogs now share the crown with Harvard and Princeton.

The match was tight throughout, with the Bulldogs holding a 3-2 lead early after wins by Avner Geva at No. 6, Francis Johnson at No. 8 and Trevor Rees at No. 9.

The evening turned when a 2-0 lead at No. 4 for Moshe Sarfaty slipped away. Harvard's Jason De Lierre rallied for a 3-2 win in the hotly-contested matchup.

With the match tied at three, attention shifted to the Skillman and Grote courts, where the No. 5 and No. 7 matches were going on. Trailing 1-0 at No. 5, Max Samuel was down 8-6 to Garnett Booth in the second game but rallied for a 10-8 win that momentarily kept hope alive for the Bulldogs.

Right next door, though, Andrew Vinci dropped a 10-9 heartbreaker in the second game to fall behind 2-0. Verdi Desesa then finished Vinci off 3-0 to give the Crimson control of the match.

Samuel continued to battle to keep the Bulldogs alive, winning 9-7 to take a 2-1 lead on Booth.

The No. 3 match, the last match to start, saw Ho Ming Chiu matched up against two-time All-American Ilan Oren. Oren wrapped things up for the Crimson with a convincing 3-0 victory.

That left the rest of the Samuel-Booth matchup a formality, as Booth rallied for a 3-2 win that gave Harvard the 6-3 final.
