AMHERST, Mass. - Six members of the men's squash team traveled to Amherst, Mass. today to compete in the 2006 CSA Individual Championships. Julian Illingworth easily advanced to the quarterfinals in the 32-player Potter Division (men's A), and Moshe Sarfaty advanced to the quarterfinals of the Potter Consolation bracket after dropping his first-round match.
Illingworth, seeded No. 3 in the tournament, downed Princeton's Nate Beck in the first round 6-9, 9-1, 9-3, 9-4 and beat Lee Rosen of Penn 9-4, 8-10, 9-1, 9-4 in the second round. In the quarters, Illingworth will face Gustav Detter of Trinity, whom he beat in four games when Yale played the Bantams on Wed., Jan. 25.
Sarfaty, seeded No. 22, lost a tough match to Princeton's Hesham El Halaby in the first round, 10-8, 9-0, 9-2, but came back to defeat Williams's William Walker 6-9, 9-5, 7-9, 9-1, 9-0 to advance to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.
In other action, No. 29 Joseph Samuel dropped two tough matches, losing to Shaun Johnstone of Trinity 9-0, 9-0, 9-1 and William Cheng of Cornell, 9-1, 9-4, 9-1.
No. 18 Nick Chirls came back to win an epic match against Trinity's Manek Mather in the first round, 3-9, 9-6, 9-1, 1-9, 9-7. Facing defending CSA Individual Champion Yasser El Halaby in the second round, Chirls put up a good fight but fell 9-4, 9-4, 9-1.
In the Malloy Division (men's B), Trevor Rees thrashed James Zhang of Notre Dame 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 in the first round before falling to Edward Cerullo of Brown in the second round, 10-8, 9-0, 2-9, 9-4. Andrew Vinci was able to defeat Hamilton's Anthony Bardaro in a five-game match, 5-9, 9-3, 9-4, 7-9, 9-6 before falling to Nicholas Hrdy of Harvard in the second round, 9-3, 9-0, 9-0.
Play will continue through Sunday. Illingworth and Detter square off tomorrow at 1:30 p.m., and Sarfaty will meet Eduardo Pereira of Trinity at 11:30 a.m.
