Bulldogs Drop Quakers 7-2

Dec. 4, 2004

New Haven, CT - The nationally ranked No. 3 Elis cruised to a season-opening victory Saturday afternoon, defeating No. 4 Penn 7-2 at the Brady Squash Center. All-American Julian Illingworth, currently ranked the No. 3 player in the country, gave up only six points in his 3-0 victory over Penn opponent Gilly Lane.

Yale overpowered the Quakers in matches 4-9, taking all six contests. The Bulldogs relinquished just three of 18 games in those matches. At No. 5, Yale captain Gavin Cumberbatch fought his way to a five-game victory, pulling out the match with a 9-5 win in the final game.

"It was a good match," Yale head coach Dave Talbott said. "A lot of those matches were long hard games. That was a good opening win, to beat the number four team in the country 7-2."

The Bulldog freshmen were especially impressive in their Ivy League debut. Playing at No. 4, Moshe Sarfaty rebounded after dropping the first game to cruise to his first collegiate victory. Fellow rookie Ho Ming Chiu, playing at No. 6, needed only three games to defeat Penn's Spencer Kurn.

The Elis do not return to action until January 14, when they face Williams on the road.
