Bulldogs Compete At CSA Individuals

March 2, 2008

Nine Bulldogs headed to Maryland this weekend to compete in the CSA Individual Championships, the final event of the 2007-2008 squash season. Francis Johnson advanced to the semifinals of the Malloy Division (Men's B), and freshman Naishadh Lalwani advanced to the Malloy quarterfinals in his first appearance at the CSAs.

Johnson, seeded No. 4 in the Malloy Division, cruised through his first two matches on Friday and Saturday. He defeated No. 32 Brendan Bascom of Princeton, 3-0 (10-9, 9-3, 9-4) and No. 18 Ethan Buchsbaum of Williams, 3-1 (9-6, 9-3, 7-9, 9-5) to reach the quarters.

No. 22 Lalwani beat No. 43 Benjamin Clayman of Hamilton, 3-0 (9-4, 9-2, 9-3) before upsetting No. 11 Daniel McElyaine of St. Lawrence, 3-0 (9-4, 9-0, 9-2). He downed No. 27 Ryan Forster of Western Ontario, 3-2 (5-9, 0-9, 9-5, 9-0, 9-4) to complete the other half of the all-Bulldog quarterfinal. In an epic five-game match, Johnson finally pulled out a 3-2 (9-2, 9-2, 8-9, 8-10, 9-3) win over his young teammate.

He pushed No. 2 Richard Hill of Harvard to the brink in the semifinal match, but ultimately bowed out, 3-2 (8-10, 9-8, 9-5, 7-9, 9-0).

Elsewhere, in the Potter (Men's A) final, No. 1 Baset Chaudhry of Trinity defeated fellow Bantam and No. 3 Gustav Detter, 3-1 (9-3, 10-8, 7-9, 9-6) to win the national title.
