NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale will play host to the USA Five Man Team Squash Nationals Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Brady Squash Center. This year's event has attracted six players in the world's top 100 rankings, including former Bulldog Julian Illingworth '06, Yasser El Halaby, Chris Gordon, Liam Kenny, Gilly Lane and Reggie Schonborn. Other professional squash players will be competing in the event as well.
Kenny and Schonborn lead the No. 1 seed Hartford team. Illingworth, who achieved the highest ranking ever for an American male softball squash player when he was ranked No. 37 in the world this past spring, leads No. 2 seed Team Ketcham. That team also includes Lane along with Yale associate head coach Gareth Weber, Josh Schwartz '05, John Musto '91, Nick Chirls '07 and Terence Li '04. Among the other Yale alums competing is former women's No. 1 player Catherine McLeod, who will be on No. 6 seed team CityView.
The tournament, which concludes Sunday with the title match at 11:30 a.m., are part of a busy weekend at the Brady Squash Center. World squash greats Peter Nicol and Natalie Grainger will hold an exhibition on Saturday at 1:15 p.m. to benefit efforts to make squash a part of the Olympic games. Additionally, the tournament has partnered with Squash Haven to raise money for the Yale outreach program. A benefit for Squash Haven will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, featuring Brian Mathias Band and Suitcase of Keys.
