Christopher Luu Elected 2011-2012 Men's Swimming and Diving Captain
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Christopher Luu, one of Yale's top breaststrokers, has been elected captain of the 2011-2012 Elis. The announcement was made at the annual post-season banquet.
"It is an incredibly humbling experience being elected captain by my teammates and I am both honored and excited to lead this team next year." Luu said. "The Yale Men's Swimming program has a long history extremely rich in tradition and it is such an honor simply being a part of it. I know that I can count on the fellow members of my class for their help and support next year as we are all leaders in our own ways."
The Monterey Park, Calif. native posted top-20 finishes in both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events at this year's Ivy League Championships, and has been an integral part of the Elis' breast-stroking corps throughout his career.
Luu will take over an improving Bulldog team that finished fourth at this year's Ivy League Championships thanks in large part not only to Luu's fellow upperclassmen, but also to big contributions from the younger members. The potential of those swimmers in combination with the experience of a strong group of upperclassmen means Luu will be taking the helm of a team hoping to make a splash in 2011-12.
"The unanimous goal for our team next year is to place in the top three at the Ivy League Championships," Luu said. "We have an extremely fast and deep freshman class coming in and our current freshmen have done a great job this year as well. While we graduate a significant number of seniors, we return a core group of experienced and motivated individuals all working towards a unified goal. The team is extremely motivated and I see a sense of team accountability that I hope to continue to foster moving forward."
As he leads the Bulldogs into their second season with Tim Wise as Yale's Robert J.H. Kiphuth Head Coach of Men's Swimming and Diving, Luu can draw on lessons learned from those who came before him.
