During his freshman year at Yale, John participated in the ECAC championship, placing seventh in both the 200 and 400 IM's and 11th in the 200 Back. He also anchored the 800 freestyle relay. John spent his senior year of high school at the American Community School in Surrey, England, lettering in three varsity sports: cross-country, swimming, and tennis. He is the ISST championship record holder in the 100 backstroke. John was a member of the National Honor Society in 2004. From 1999-2003, John was a member of the Dad's Swim Club in Texas, and before that the Lake Erie Silver Dolphins of Ohio from 1995-1999. In Houston, John attended The Kinkaid School. After his sophomore year, John was the record holder of every individual event for the Kinkaid High School Swim Team. John was also a Scholastic All-American in both 2002 and 2003. Interested in International Business, John selected Yale because of its reputation both in academics and swimming. He plans to double major in Economics and International Studies. John swims all strokes at Yale but mainly specializes in the individual medley.
