Hailing from sunny South Carolina, Matt Thunell is a versatile addition to the Yale squad. An alumnus of Dreher High School in Columbia, SC, Matt was named MVP of his high school team five years in a row. For both his junior and seniors years, he was elected team captain. Matt is a three-time High School State Champion, twice in the 100 butterfly and once in the 100 freestyle. Matt also received Academic All America honors for three consecutive years and Wendy's High School Heisman recognition while swimming for his club team, Team Carolina. At Yale, Matt had the incredible opportunity to compete for the Bulldogs in the Eastern Championships as a sophomore. His most memorable athletic experience to date was making the travel squad his freshman year after walking on the team in September. In his spare time, Matt enjoys performing with his a cappella group, The Duke's Men. He also enjoys attending and acting in plays and musicals. His parents, Bob and Maureen, and brothers, Thomas and Daniel, are a constant source of encouragement and support.
