PITTSBURGH, Pa. - After two days of competition at the ECAC Swimming Championships, the Yale men's swimming and diving team is sitting in second place with 334 points. The Bulldogs are just 15 points behind leaders Johns Hopkins. On a strong second day, Yale had representatives in all seven 'A' finals.
The Bulldogs picked up where they left off Saturday, showing their dominance in the individual medley. This time, it was the 400-yard individual medley final, which featured three Yale swimmers. Mike Slater won the event in a time of 4:03.30. John Lynch finished in fifth place in 4:06.09, and Ilya Byzov came in sixth in a time of 4:08.64. As in the 200-individual medley final yesterday, the Bulldogs were able to put a lot of points on the board in this one event by having so many swimmers qualify for the final.
In the next event, the 100-yard butterfly final, Yale had a strong performance from sophomore Alexander Goldsmith. Goldsmith finished in fourth place in a time of 50.60. Connor Murphy won the 'B' final of the event in a time of 51.60.
After the first three events, the Bulldogs sat on top of the leader board. Yale continued to perform well, but was overtaken by a deep Johns Hopkins squad by the end of the day.
Other solid performances were recorded by Gjorgji Gjeorgjievski and Chris Dufek. Gjeorgjievksi finished fifth in the final of the 200-yard freestyle, while Dufek came sixth in the 100-yard backstroke.
The Bulldogs also tallied crucial points in the relay events. In the 200-yard medley relay, the Yale team of Dufek, Matt Sweitzer, Goldsmith and Tom Hardy finished in fifth place in a time of 1:34.20. In the last event of the day, the 800-yard freestyle relay finals, the Bulldogs went one better. The team of Connor Murphy, Gjeorgjievski, Reid Madden and Kieran Locke finished in fourth place in a time of 6:55.51.
The Bulldogs will resume competition at Tree Pool tomorrow morning at 9 am. Sunday is the final day of ECAC Championships, hosted by the University of Pittsburgh. Complete Results are available on the University of Pittsburgh Athletics website.
