Bulldogs In Eighth at ECAC Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Bulldogs men's swimming and diving team opened the second day of competition at the ECAC Championships hosted by Harvard at Blodgett Pool with a number of strong performances. The Bulldogs, who currently sit in eighth place with 114 points, placed fourth last year. Navy is currently leading the meet with 437 points.

The top finish of the day for the team was a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of sophomore Jason Choi, sophomore Zak Murez, freshman Matt Boone and junior Jon Taylor swam an impressive time of 1:33.08. The team missed out on fifth by only two-hundredths.

The next best event for the team was the 100-yard backstroke, an event that sophomore Alex Gornitzky took seventh in. Gornitzky qualified for the A finals of the event and swam 52.11. Gornitzky swam even better in the preliminary race, swimming to a time of 51.90.

Sophomore Zak Murez, who has come on strongly near the end of the year, had a great day in the 100-yard breaststroke. Murez qualified for the A final and took eighth place in the event with a time of 58.50. He was even faster in the preliminary race, swimming a time of 57.57.

The team also did well in the 800-meter freestyle relay, taking 13th. The team of Gornitzky, Taylor, sophomore Nick Van Nispen and senior Dan Li swam to a time of 7:09.57.

Boone and Choi also competed in the 100-yard backstroke event. Boone was 14th in a time of 52.72 and Choi was 16th in 53.67.

The Bulldogs will resume the meet with the final day of competition on Sunday. The rest of the team that is not competing at the ECAC Championships will compete at the Ivy League Championships next week.
